I have a pipeline (shapefile) that I am trying to convert to points where the pipeline has a bend in it.

I tried to convert the vertices to points in ArcMap 10.1, however this will not work in this case as my line has a vertex every 1 metre (even when the line is straight).

Try to simplify first, that should remove interim points from straight sections. – user30184 Jun 17 '14 at 7:36
it looks like your are working with ArcGIS, but could you specify which version ? – radouxju Jun 17 '14 at 7:46
Would you be able to revise your Question to include a question mark somewhere to indicate what you are asking, please? I suspect it is that simply adding a vertex at every point is not suitable for you because you have too many of them, but if that is the issue then how would you like the vertices to be weeded before converting them? – PolyGeo Jun 17 '14 at 23:37
The question is quite clear and it is a solid question. No need to add a question mark. – If you do not know- just GIS Jun 17 '14 at 23:44
