I am trying to find some information, specifically poll results on platforms and languages used for GIS software solutions. I remember taking one but I cannot find the poll to see the results, it may have even been an ESRI poll for all I know. Can anybody point me to any of those results who may know where they had been squirreled away to?

I suppose this is a race for the first person to suggest

Good thing you put in that "..suggest google..." bit, otherwise you might have gotten a I LOVE to use that on friends and co-workers! – Chad Cooper Aug 12 '10 at 19:11

Here's one the man, Dave Bouwman, did back in 2008.

this survey is really nice, although a bit outdated – dodobas Aug 12 '10 at 19:45

The only one I found was specifically for Web Application Development.

Directions Magazine has been running polls for over a decade. You might be able to dig up some recent results on their website. If you can't find what you're looking for, contact the editors: they are typically responsive and can find a poll or will create one.

(Disclaimer: I edited this magazine a decade ago, but I'm no longer formally associated with it.)

Look on Daratech statistics but be careful, not free...

The same goes for

You can get some infos indirectly with a gis survey (limited mainly to commercial because no open source solution, no python,...).

Edit: Forget to mentionned a discussion on "GIS and programming" on linkedin GIS group but you need an account and to suscribe to the group.

I have considered those market reports before but I am not sure if they would have the granularity I need. Some of them are only like 11 pages long I think, covering the industry as a whole. – Dandy Aug 27 '10 at 14:33

Can't help you with the location of the poll I'm afraid, but why not use this question as a poll on what people use to develop solutions for GIS?

I'm happy to start with:

  • Python and Eclipse, and PyDev for the vast majority of my GIS dev work
  • VB.Net for creating front ends for ArcGIS (though typically these just call Python scripts)
  • Java and Python for web developement (Spring and Django)
  • And lastly a bit of AML for some maintenance

Hope this helps!

I thought about it but I am not sure of that will be as representative of the GIS industry. Most of the programmers I worked with spent an entire 15 seconds on stackoverflow to see if it solved their immediate problem or not. It is still beta too. – Dandy Aug 12 '10 at 12:18
