Google Maps API v2 had great methods for lines and polygons to calculate length and area.

v3 is lacking these methods (maybe just for now?). What other options do I have for calculating line length and polygon area?

Will Cadell (@geo_will) provided an answer for me on Twitter! Check out the GPL extendedApi for Google Maps v3 package.

Nice find. I saw the line length but couldn't find any polygon.getArea(). Maybe it's on the way. –  Jason Jul 23 '10 at 11:55

Does this take in account the elevation of the land ? –  Kunal Jan 29 '12 at 6:29

Here is an Android app with many different measure features (area, distance, and angles measurements on Google Maps with different units): Planimeter - GPS area measure

A new web app just arrived and it is free to. You can draw polygon and get the aream distances and other pretty impressive stuff using the Google Map API v3. the app is called Creative Surveying http://www.creativesurveying.com
