I'm looking for an open source GIS that supports viewing and editing of CityGML models.

So far, I've found a list of open source applications that support CityGML, but they all seem to be stand-alone applications: http://www.citygmlwiki.org/index.php/Open_Source.

I would also be interested in your experience with CityGML in a GIS (also commercial) context.

I asked a question about this a little while ago - it wasn't specific to opensource tools though. gis.stackexchange.com/questions/6406/… –  djq Aug 15 '11 at 13:48

What exactly do you mean by "stand-alone applications"? Do you mean you want something that is part of a larger suite of applications? Or do you mean something that is both viewer and editor? –  Mark Ireland Aug 15 '11 at 20:27

It should be more than just a viewer/editor. What I'd love to see is a GIS - with all the usual functionality - that can handle CityGML. –  underdark Aug 15 '11 at 20:47

You can view cityGML with gvSIG 3D, see gvsig3d.blogspot.com/2011/09/… but I haven't tested to see if you can edit them so I didn't post as a possible answer. The video shows scaling and repositioning of the 3d object; I don't know where the edits are stored: in the view as part of the layer symbology, or hard coded edits into the citygml file? –  SaultDon Sep 21 '11 at 18:02

deegree3D (part of a broader FOSS geospatial project, deegree) looks like it might work for you. Probably depends a lot on what features you need. Unfortunately I haven't tried it, so I can't comment on its use or reliability.
