Today I suddenly noticed my geoserver WMS and WMF layers are offline. I use geoserver and it has been running fine for three months. The postgis database is fine and geoserver is still running. However, all layers have a warning triangle under enable. If I publish again from the same store I also see a warning triangle and no preview is available.

geoserver version 4.4 on ubuntu tomcat7

What should I do? Part of the log file:

  • Hi thanks, with the initial set up I added this: sudo echo 'export CATALINA_OPTS="-Xms512M -Xmx1024M"' > /usr/share/tomcat7/bin/setenv.sh to optimise memory settings, as a result set-up seems stable - I also use monit to auto restart if tomcat fails. Not sure I can do anything else. Aug 24, 2015 at 11:59

One of your datastores (cresh:datazones_totkm2sc7) has failed for some reason (it's off the end of the log you've included) - which may be that you've run out of connections, the network blipped... try restarting geoserver and see what happens if you can't see an obvious reason that that datastore is off line.

  • Rebooting the server did not help, but I could enable the datastore (see answer below). Not sure what caused this.. Aug 24, 2015 at 11:26
  • Once a datastore is disabled, you must enable it manually via the GUI or via a REST call. There is no other way to do it.

Make sure GeoServer starts after the DBMS.

If GeoServer starts before the DBMS and you do a restart then GS will disable all the DBMS based stores since it won't be able to establish a connection.

Having monit around, it might have happeneded that GeoServer got restarted when the DBMS was down. At that point you have to manually re-enable datastores that have been disabled.

  • Ah, great. I am hoping it will not happen again (too often). Thanks! Aug 25, 2015 at 14:20

All,

When I logged on as administrator, I could enable the datastore (tick the box). Simple solution, everything is back up again. However, I now need to work out how this happened and whether I need to improve security. The store was not disabled by me.

Thanks, Ilona
