# How do I convert a Polygon into a single or all Points?

I want to convert polygons into points. I know how it's done in ArcGis and I think this may sound trivial but it's a serious issue :/.

I'll appreciate any hints :)

Do you mean convert the polygon borders into points or just reduce it to a point (get centroids)? – R.K. Apr 30 '12 at 14:35

Aragon, i didn't make it! i have 2 polygon and after using the tool i got only 2 point in the center of the polygon. i want point in the perimeter of the polygons.how do i do it with qgis? – newGIS Jan 14 at 8:37

It should be noted that the arcgis "feature to point" tool has the 'inside' option, which forces the point to be created inside the polygon if the actual centroid falls outside the boundaries of the polygon: resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//… – mapBaker Sep 20 '13 at 21:03

If you want to decide on your own point spacing, you can use the Sextante Toolbox with SAGA functionality activated (you'll need to install saga - www.saga-gis.org/ - and specify the installation path in sextante). Use the 'polygons to line' geoalgoritm followed by the 'line to points' one. You can create a model in sextante that combines these into one step as well.

Note: you have to make sure you install the right version of SAGA - I think its 2.0.8
