I have recently downloaded landcover data from DIVA-GIS and the 2 files I got were a .gri and a .grd. I cannot open them in QGIS

Are you trying to use the 'add raster layer' dialog? .GRD files are a standard type that QGIS can open, through the GDAL library. – Simbamangu May 6 '12 at 9:52
