What software do you use as complementary to your GIS desktop/server in your work as GIS programmers/analysts and what programs are an absolute must you can't do without?

@dassouki: thanks for giving me the prompt to add thinks like Illustrator and image conversion. Prior to that my thinking was following the crowd trend and not looking to the wider world. :) – matt wilkie♦ Oct 20 '10 at 19:27

Textpad for editing just about everything.

GDAL helps with everything from changing coords sys to tiling images.

Talend open studio get information in and out the DB and everywhere elese.

imagemagik changing image formats/resolutions and colours of tiles for tilecache.

  • Any decent text editor for scripting;
  • R for statistical analysis of the (spatial) data
  • GIMP and Inkscape for further improving map images;
  • Libreoffice / OpenOffice when I need to edit (small) shapefile dbf files;
  • SQLite manager add-on for Firefox or Navicat (but any decent SQLite manager will do) for working on GRASS GIS attribute tables and Spatialite databases
  • Maptiler to convert maps to tiled maps for OpenLayer or Google earth.
