When logging into ArcSDE 10.0 on Windows Server 2008 R2. The underlying db is MSSQL 2008.

At different times during the day we are getting bad login errors from ArcMap. We are trying to connect with both service and direct connections and os authentication.

The only reliable connection that I have seen so far is connecting as sde user with database authentication.

Where can I start troubleshooting this. The sql server instance is set to have unlimited memory which I've read that it will take from the operating system and not release unless explicitly made to. Is there some max connection settings that would affect this.

How about the network side. Since sde user never seems to be locked out does this point to a domain server issue that is trying to authenticate us from Houston over to Canada and some time out is being hit?

Thanks.
