When running the example data for Alaska, the attribute table view for Lakes only shows the first row. All lakes are displayed in the map view.

Which lake is it? Maybe you have "only show selection" ticked on. – lynxlynxlynx Sep 29 '12 at 14:19
There's a possibility that the lakes layer is a multi-part layer. What happens when you use the identify tool on different lakes? Do they all show the same attributes? – Rayner Sep 29 '12 at 19:12
Perhaps the shapefile is bad? Here, lakes.shp has 15 features, each one with its own attributes. N. – nhopton Sep 30 '12 at 9:15
