We have some IMGs that we're trying to convert to ECWs with the fourth band activated to mask the wretched black null data borders. The instructions we got from ERDAS were to create an AOI and export the data from IMG to ECW using the AOI as the mask layer. However, we keep getting the same error of "ERROR: Could not open ECW Compression Engine" when we try to run that export.

Anyone run into these problems before? The files in question are quite large as IMGs (100+ GBs).

Appreciate any help or advice you may have to offer. Unfortunately, I am limited to this software and this procedure because it is the only one that works with our IMS.

Yes, i had a problem with AOI files as well. Never came across that, im not sure about the huge size of your files being a problem because i once worked with a 240gb .img file. About the AOI: I heard the never versions support shapefiles as well, but in your case it seems to me you have a problem with ECW SDK. Which erdas imagine version are you using? – U2ros Oct 15 '12 at 18:36
I'm using 11.0.5 Build 1308. From my understanding, the export to ECW with an AOI mask layer wasn't available before 11. What problem have you had with AOI? I can try to help. – D_Az Oct 15 '12 at 19:20
Erdas would crash everytime i loaded an AOI (i was using it in side mosaic tool). No problem, i worked around it using georeferenced png's :) – U2ros Oct 16 '12 at 6:12
