Geographic Information Systems Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for cartographers, geographers and GIS professionals. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I used to model databases with Microsoft Office Visio, then export the model to xml and import geodatabase schema to GDB with ArcGIS tools. Since Microsoft no longer support Visio export to xml, what are the alternatives?

I've added a listing of Esri tools for this purpose here –  Stephen Lead Mar 3 at 0:25

I'm a big fan of the Toad Data Modeller. Alternately try this from StackOverflow.

Has anyone used Enterprise Architect? Is it convenient for designing Geodatabases for ArcGIS?

Enterprise Architect is used to design the data schemas of INSPIRE, the future European spatial data infrastructure (see inspire.jrc.ec.europa.eu). This software can export data schemas in GML format. I do not know for ArcGIS geodatabases. –  julien Aug 2 '10 at 14:54

I use it all the time for all UML, Code Generation, Schemas, & many more needs. –  CaptDragon Mar 5 '12 at 20:27

The Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect website has a posting on UML support for ArcGIS Geodatabase Design. There is a tutorial and a video demonstration explaining how it all works.

I hope this helps!

I have tried ArcGIS Diagrammer (for ArcGIS 9.2/9.3 or for ArcGIS 10) but it is not so convenient..

ArcGis Diagrammer is best tool available so far! –  George Jul 27 '10 at 12:09

Perhaps ESRI should focus on having a method to design Geodatabases instead of creating iPhone apps. Or maybe they should let us use databases with ArcMap and get rid of the SDE altogether. –  westyvw Jul 28 '10 at 0:03

is this the tool you mean? –  matt wilkie Jul 28 '10 at 19:49

I have been told that using ArcGIS Diagrammer and GDB X-Ray in conjuction with Visio can do most of what would be needed.
