I am trying to query the values of a series of columns NAME_# with the # matching the values of another column LEVEL and then populating another column with what I retrieve

You would need to write a function which dynamically creates the NAME_# query after running the LEVEL query. The NAME_# query could then use the results saved from the LEVEL query. – Micha Dec 1 '12 at 15:22

This sounds like a schema design issue to me. Maybe you need to check out hstore, XML or json columns, or even (ugh) EAV? – Craig Ringer Dec 2 '12 at 8:48
