I'm becoming a real fan of using GDAL tools in a bash terminal. However, I quite often get stuck trying to solve particular problems, or getting syntaxes right. Apart from the details provided in the links on GDAL Utilities, does anyone know of any 3rd party resources/manuals explaining it in a bit more user friendly way?

Any help much appreciated.

@R.K. The unknown territory I came across today was creation options, commonly used under the -co function I believe. In particular, I wondered which compression type to use for a GeoTiff. They are mentioned but not explained here - gdal.org/frmt_gtiff.html. I also don't understand where the utilities with .py extensions can be used. QGIS maybe? On a broader note, having never been formally taught GDAL I just find the utilities page a bit too technical. I guess my expectations are high, having used ESRI help pages for a while... – JPD Jan 10 at 15:20
