What are the differences between the various versions (1 through 5) of the Global Land Cover (GLC) 2000 product?

I am going to use northern North America, Europe and Asia (north of 50°N). Is it better to mosaic the continental products (even though they are different versions) or use the global product (v 1.0). I want the best data source that I can get for land classification, so if anyone has other recommendations, I would appreciate it.
