I Have a scipt tool that runs when input shape files are added from the table of contents (added from drop down menu.) However this tool will not run when they shape files are added using the add file button. ArcGIS 10.0 Workspace settings all seem to be in order...

Sounds like your tool expects Feature Layers and not Feature Classes - layers from the Table of Contents work but data (shapefiles, features classes) found via browser and Catalog are not layers so are not recognised using your current Parameter settings. – PolyGeo Feb 27 at 10:06
