I installed qgis through macports on my mac running OSX 10.8.2 but when I run the application (qgis 1.8) it says that I don't have python-gdal installed.

I searched google and it appears that it is because qgis is using the pre-installed version of python that comes with OSX. I have my own version of python 2.7 built through macports, and would like to use it with qgis if possible.

Does anybody knows how to tell qgis to use that version instead?

it is a bug, see http://trac.macports.org/ticket/36906 Why not simply use the KyngChaos version ?

Thank you for the suggestion. I initially didn't want to use the system python because it is much easier to manage all the different packages using macports, but apparently qgis only works with the system python. – Guilherme Kenji Chihaya Feb 27 at 12:14

Can I use the python libraries from macports with the system Python? I like to be able to use terminal commands like "port upgrade outdated" instead of having to keep track of updates by myself. I think it will get complicated after installing lots of python libraries. – Guilherme Kenji Chihaya Feb 27 at 22:05
