In my company we have a number of databases in an MS SQL instance. This morning only 1 database i generating following error when I try to do a direct-connect in ArcCatalog:

Failed to connect to database. Underlying DBMS error[sde.DEFAULT][STATE_ID = 1]

I have increased the number of allowed connections to 10 000 and that's is more than enough. Still the problem exists. Does anyone have a clue? :)

Check sde error logs on the server (in the etc directory under $SDEHOME)) –  Sunil Mar 8 '13 at 13:02
Which SDE you are using (9.x or 10 ? ) –  Sunil Mar 8 '13 at 13:07
+ 1 how do you connect SDE through catalog or arcmap ? –  Sunil Mar 8 '13 at 13:11
What do the database logs say? –  Devdatta Tengshe Mar 11 '13 at 10:57
Hi. been away for a couple of days. We are not using ArcSDE in that way. We use direct connections to the SQL database and instance. The only thing that seems to solve the connection problem is to kick all users than do an restore of the database. It has now happened 2 times in a week. –  nick anderson Mar 14 '13 at 14:14

The error is not very clear, but definitely not related to the number of users connecting to the database. (In such cases you get error - Unable to connect to database. Maximum number of connections to instance exceeded).

I error message mentions STATE_ID, considering this I would recommend you to COMPRESS the database once (it is okay to compress even when users are connected) and then check if the error message still persists.

I think it should be resolved, let me know.
