I'm Looking for WMS services freely available to the public to overlay on my application, specifically weather and AIS information.

Perhaps this is a good place to list some available online WMS services you have stumbled across?

Giant list with status checker from FGDC - US focused

Great US weather WMS source

Is there a way to search these directories for a particular area, I'm situated in Australia, Brisbane and curious about weather data available near me – Jamo Feb 21 '11 at 23:55
Sorry, was being a bit US-centric. Unfortunately, looks like the AUS weather service charges for access to most of their services, including WMS ( – wwnick Feb 22 '11 at 23:53 is one service where you can overlay our wms layer path to wms url load is 2.In tools tab go to add layer in that wmslayer in that pass your desired wms url and layer name this two inputs were needed – user28536 Jul 1 at 11:36

A couple of useful resources to find public map services:

WMS server from the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) - University of Wisconsin - Madison http:/

If you are in the US then the National Weather Service provides loads of layers at!section=mapservices

ArcGIS Server mapservices that support WMS can be located using an appropriately worded google search.

The INSPIRE geoportal provides a long list of European geographic datasets. Most of them are published as open WMSs. It is possible to search based on this criteria: Select datasets with a "view service".

This is a bit old thread, but a comprehensive and free search engine for WMS, WMTS and WFS services around the world can be found in Spatineo Directory:

The database currently contains more than 13000 spatial web services with 300000+ layers around the world, most of them freely available. For each service there is also basic availability info included each directory service page. For an example see the page of the Open Data service of the Finnish Meteorological Institute

Thanks for the additional answer. Please make sure to disclose your affiliation with Spatineo in any of your answers that reference it, in accordance with the site's rules...see Avoid Overt Self-Promotion section. – user3461 Nov 6 '13 at 18:19
Yes, sorry. I'm proud to be the founder & CTO of Spatineo. – Ilkka Rinne Nov 27 '13 at 9:24

Another WMS directory:

We're looking for long answers that provide some explanation and context. Don't just give a one-line answer; explain why your answer is right, ideally with citations. Answers that don't include explanations may be removed.

Maybe, it is too late, bu there is a web where you can find wms using keywords, but is still a bit primitive:
