I am creating an application for mapping in Windows Phone and find that Microsoft uses the CRP Algorithm to find a route between two points. So how exactly does this work? I already read their paper here and slide here, but it's too complicated. Can someone help me explain it in simple way?

The only thing I understand is that they have 3 phases. But don't understand what each phase does.

  1. Metric-Independent Preprocessing Exploit topology of the network May take a few minutes, linear space overhead
  2. Metric Customization Fast: < 30 sec per metric Space overhead: small fraction of input
  3. Queries Reasonably fast for each metric Worst-case guarantees
