The "new" google maps has the awesome feature of accessing the earth globe in the browser (on Mac and Windows), without the need for installing the google earth plugin.

I know that you can access the new look and feel of the maps in Version 3 of the API using google.maps.visualRefresh global property set to true. However I have not been able to access the earth globe.

I had a look at the available mapTypes and there is no "earth", or "satellite_3d", and nothing really in the documentation which leads me to think it is available.

Does anyone know if this is at all possible? And if so how do you go about it?

This functionality in the v3 of the API does not exist. It might in a higher version but unconfirmed. – Mapperz Jul 8 '13 at 13:37
I couldn't see anything in the V3 experimental either – Ando Jul 10 '13 at 0:30
