Geographic Information Systems Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for cartographers, geographers and GIS professionals. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I am new to GIS, but have a work project that I need to integrate CoastLine geometry data in to a report.

I downloaded some of ThinkGeo's OpenStreetMap shapefiles and have tried to load them using Shp2SQLServer for use in my reporting application. I also tried the Shape2SQL application and it will not load the files either.

I get this error message from Shp2SQLServer:

Unhandled Exception: System.IO.EndOfStreamException: Unable to read beyond the end of the stream. at System.IO.__Error.EndOfFile() at System.IO.BinaryReader.ReadByte() at Cumberland.Data.Shapefile.DBaseIIIFile..ctor(String file, Encoding encoding) at Cumberland.Data.SqlServer.Loader.MainClass.Main(String[] args)

Shape2SQL acts like its loading the file, but never creates the table in SQL.

Other shapefiles seem to load properly and if I run the ThinkGeo shapefiles through FME Workbench they work fine, but for some reason they will not load from direct download. This issue is that I am on a trial version of FME Workbench and need to find a free solution to load this files going forward.

I tried passing the files through ogr2ogr but the resulting file will not load either.

I am 95% sure the issue is with the ThinkGeo shapefiles, as other shapefiles work fine, but am wondering if there is freeware to get me past the import errors. What is FME Workbench doing to these files that corrects the issue? Could I just be missing a parameter in the loading or conversion process?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
