SDE is middleware that sits between your RDBMS and ArcObjects application and acts as a (spatially enabled) data abstraction layer (much like OLEDB, ADO.NET or the like). When appropriate, SDE leverages the underlying datastore's functionality it needs (e.g., spatial indexes, xml fields, etc). When the specific functionality is missing and thus cannot be delegated, SDE provides a default implementation.
