An integrated development environment to develop applications in many programming languages, including Java, C, JavaScript, PHP, Python, R and Ruby.

Eclipse (http://www.eclipse.org) is a multi-language integrated development environment (IDE). It is written mostly in Java, but it can be extended with plugins to expand its functionality and be used as development platform for numerous other languages, including those often used for the development of GIS applications, like Python, R, Java, or JavaScript. Eclipse can be used to develop ArcGIS Python scripts and there is an ArcGIS plug-in for Eclipse to help developers create applications using the ArcGIS Runtime API for Java. Eclipse is free and open source software, released under the Eclipse Public License.
