comment Changing band for greyscale in plugin
Aaron - it works in the console - by selecting the layer, getting the renderer from the layer and then setting the renderer again (see the last part of my original post) - but so far not in a script (I have not looked into this for a while now, I have had other things to do, but I would love to manage to do this in a script)

comment problem reading netcdf
It seems like qgis (at least with the gdal version in recent osgeo4w) does not read netcdf4 - I got the provider to convert the data into netcdf3 and it all worked fine...

I'll check. I am running qgis on windows at work and on debian at home - at least on debian it does not stick - on windows it even sticks between sessions - you are right, I remembered wrong about having the issue on windows.

Thanks! If it just could stay at the same file type, in my experience, it falls back to .BW each time :-/

comment Is it possible to calculate a value based on values of another row?
No, it is for all points, just as @HasT said below, it is easy to do in Excel - if it was not for the hassle of exporting and importing.

That's what I have been doing, the problem is just that I need to do this a lot of times and then it ends up with a lot of hazzle to go back and forth between qgis and excel (Excel cannot just update a file that is held open by qgis...)
