comment Compiling PostGIS fails when it can't find GDALAllRegister
Yeah, I've tried --with-gdalconfig and it didn't help. I'll check out the log when I get home this evening.

It worked just fine with PostGIS the last time I compiled it, that was a SVN pull of PostGIS

Built it myself with the following options: ./configure --prefix=/usr --with-netcdf --with-libtiff --with-sqlite3 \ --with-geotiff --with-mysql --with-python --without-libtool --with-curl \ --with-hdf5 --with-perl --with-geos --with-png \ --with-fgdb=/opt/FileGDB_API

comment Which geodatabase type is most appropriate for both open source and ESRI use?
Correct. What it will do is create a new schema called sde and put all the sde related stuff in there. It won't actually touch the data in your existing tables, they will remain PostGIS geometries. You can still view and edit in non-ESRI software, however, if you version your data non-ESRI software will ignore those versions and edit the table directly which may screw up your versions. I think it would but I haven't tested that assumption.

You still need to run the Create Enterprise Geodatabase tool, but you want to create the PostGIS database first, then point the tool to the existing database.

comment Use QuantumGIS to bulk-import csv files
I think a script (Python, Ruby, even a shell script) to wrap around OGR should do the trick.
