I am particularly interested in location analytics, blending Business Intelligence with spatial analysis. Examples include retail/real estate site selection, trade area analysis, customer research, and marketing through demographic analysis.

I use Python for process and workflow automation, database reporting & manipulation, and developing new spatial tools.

I've been a GIS professional for 15+ years, most of which using ESRI tools (since Arc/Info 7.x). More recently I find myself using more open-source tools (QGIS, PostGIS, GDAL/OGR, web-based tools) and ultimately choosing "the right tool for the job" rather than being tied to a single vendor or toolset.

I think this is better suited for StackOverflow since I don't really see the "Geo" component to this question.

comment What is a simple python code to practice with in arcgis?
It's ok, there are lots of duplicate questions asked here, so you are not alone. Just try to do your research by searching for logical keywords in the search bar. For example [python] [arcpy] and then sort by "Votes". Welcome to GIS.SE!

@Barbarossa, is that 1m40s for arcpy.da.UpdateCursor correct? If so, wow, that's much faster than the others!

@Barbarossa, You say using select & calculate is slower than cursoring through all records and updating individual columns per row? I hope you share your benchmark statistics after you complete the two code options because that would surprise me, especially on larger datasets.

Have you also considered extending your PostGIS data with the pgRouting module and using it's built-in functions? Apparently the A* method uses something similar.

comment Can ArcGIS ModelBuilder be exported to Python and run in QGIS?
Can you describe the use case for why you want to migrate models/python scripts from ArcGIS to QGIS? Are they migrating from ArcGIS to QGIS, or do you just know ArcGIS and want to convert your models to their platform? If the latter, you might just look at learning the QGIS Processing Framework, the equivalent of ArcGIS ModelBuilder.

Is this a personal (mdb), file (gdb), or RDBMS (ArcSDE)?
