I am particularly interested in location analytics, blending Business Intelligence with spatial analysis. Examples include retail/real estate site selection, trade area analysis, customer research, and marketing through demographic analysis.

I use Python for process and workflow automation, database reporting & manipulation, and developing new spatial tools.

I've been a GIS professional for 15+ years, most of which using ESRI tools (since Arc/Info 7.x). More recently I find myself using more open-source tools (QGIS, PostGIS, GDAL/OGR, web-based tools) and ultimately choosing "the right tool for the job" rather than being tied to a single vendor or toolset.

comment ArcGIS ModelBuilder model works in Edit windows but not from the “open” window - do you have any experience or advice?
Since you are running your models from ArcCatalog, take a look at Select By Atribute using python script on .Shp file getting error 000840 the value is not a raster layer and Why is it important to use feature layers in ModelBuilder?. I have a hunch your error is related to not using "Layers", which by default are created in ArcMap.

comment Arcpy - What's the best way to check whether feature class has selection?
As noted in the link provided by @Jason Scheirer, using sel_count = len(desc.fidSet.split(";")) will effectively give you the equivalent of a GetSelectionCount utility, which would make it easier to validate using if sel_count > 0: do something.
