There is a Compact command in ArcToolbox that is used with File and Personal GDB.

The data is held in a remote SDE (sql server) database - does compressing apply in this instance? or is that just for file based data?

Well as I thought this example could prove useful and I have incorporated it into a new project - one thing I was wondering is if you know if it's possible to for a user to select a button on a toolbar and then listen and react to mouse down events on the map.
