@StephenLead. Good point. I won't argue with you on that. I pay for all my software (most of it open source too) and also donate to open source software I like and helps me with my work. If it helps me make a living I give back. This is a non-profit that seemed to have their hands tied. I did also suggest QGIS as the BEST solution.

comment File Geodatabase (*.gdb) support in QGIS?
Is there a reason I cannot install packages as stated in step 3 above for QGIS 1.8 Lisboa? The current executable only allows the packages for 2.2.0 as shown in step 3 above. If the executable for QGIS 1.8 Lisboa is not available I'll just install 2.2.0 and go from there.

I've always enjoyed exploring davidrumsey.com/home. Some fine cartographic examples both 'old school' and digital.

comment How to set ArcGIS for Desktop license to lower level for testing whether Python script still runs?
My former employer's IT department implemented a selection for power users to choose all three levels of licensing. It was accessed via the start menu and desktop shortcuts. Non power users did not have the option to choose ArcInfo but may have had the option to use ArcView or ArcEditor. All licenses were on a dedicated GIS server and was a floating license for unlimited users. So it depends on how your IT department has things set up. The other option is to find a machine to install again and simply install ArcView license.

As suggested QGIS is your best solution. The only other way to 'reset' most trial software is to delete it from the registry and re-install. Not recommended if you are not comfortable navigating the registry.

comment How to Plot Every Other Address on Street?
1. Yes. As @dklassen as said this is possible 2. If you had every address in the US that would be a huge database. Usually obtained through our regional districts here in BC, Canada. Perhaps equivalent would be counties in the US? 3. I doubt ESRI has accurate address data for every inch of the US but you never know; they probably have some for partnership work. 4. You are not making it harder than it actually is. The trick is finding the data for your area of operation then it should be easy.

comment Is a master's degree needed for a GIS career?
I should add that I have a diploma in Natural Resource Management and a diploma in Computer Information Systems. I only have 2 formal academic GIS courses; vector and raster. Everything else I learned on the job and through professional development and self-directed learning.

Ironically the suggested paper is exactly what a masters graduate would write as the author has a masters which ties in to @Chad Cooper's point below about writing.

comment need help to automatize report generation
Good question. Assuming you're using python, MMAP (Memory-mapped file support) is used to map python file objects. I've never used it myself. It seems to have something to do with updating the layer file. See this thread [gis.stackexchange.com/questions/80978/… to help answer your questions further. Good luck.

I believe for your table you will have to use the dynamic text method suggested above and simply layout the fields on the template to closely match the table and perhaps put a series of neatlines around the results to look like a table then group everything. From what I have read ESRI has not included the functionality to add a new layout object with arcpy. I have included summary statistics on my layout via arcpy to look like a table without neatlines/gridlines.

comment Google Maps - Use fitBounds on KML polygon fusion table layer
In the line/arc example above you will find the UNION code example in the 'ZoomTo' function. In the source code it looks like this: bounds.union(geoXml.docs[0].gpolygons[0].bounds);

Thanks for pointing that out. I totally missed that (or more like was not looking for it at the time). I'll give it a try. Cheers.

@DemarsM. Fusion Tables uses the ST_INTERSECTS to find map features within a defined area. This may work. I have not tested it myself. I need to do the same for some of my queries so I will give this a try soon. I thought it was deprecated but apparently it is not. Failing that I would think that creating a KML that is a 'box' containing your area and adding to the table may work for your selection(s). Another possibility is parsing the rows necessary to capture the entire area. These are just guesses/suggestions at this point.

comment Skill requirements and resources to run a private GIS consultancy/ GIS service providing firm?
If i can offer another piece of advice...no one GIS tool does everything you need. I use open source and proprietary software (eg: I run Linux, OsX and Windows on three different machines with ESRI, GRASS, QGIS, Postgre/GIS, MySQL). It all depends on what the client is seeking and what is most cost effective for you and them. This all was built over time as contracts came through the door. I run all of this myself. Maybe one day i'll have a few other GIS professionals on staff. Right now i like running solo.

@Josh. Check with your local government/career center. I took a small business course in college but had a refresher through a local career center which is funded through provincial and federal government funding. It was free and only two days of my time. There are tons of resources and books so you can do it yourself. Some governments even provide templates. Part of your business plan should be to talk to similar businesses for your business research. Talk to people who already do it. Google 'small business' for where you live. Tons of resources i'm sure.

comment How do I georeference a ski map?
Are you trying to achieve something like this GPS map for Alta Ski Area: mountaindynamics.com/en/resortm.php. I would say the only accurate way is as suggested above with up to date orthophoto's or go out and GPS the trails yourself for your final product which would be my preference :)
