comment trying to add content to the middle of a string
It would help if you could give more detail on how you're trying to do this. In ArcGIS or another program? With Python or a different language? Using Field Calculator?

comment How do I know what direction a road is drawn in OSM?
You can also tell in Potlatch 2: when you select a way, the little helper box in the lower right will show the general direction of the way.

comment How do I load OSM vector data in QGIS 2.x?
It wasn't clear from your question what you were doing with the data once it was imported. You can of course select out whatever features you want from the data within QGIS. As mentioned above, if you know you only want certain data (and it's not in too large an area), downloading data with Overpass would probably be better, as you can pre-select for just certain features. I find Overpass Turbo to be a user friendly way to develop queries. Here's an example of all highways in bounding box: overpass-turbo.eu/s/2VX

comment QGIS I would like to get a single point from a polygon Centroid if within the polygon any point if not
definitely a hack, but for a majority of polygon features it gives a better result than ESRI's Feature to Point tool

I'd seen your blogpost about this, and in general it gives a really nice result. One shape I've found it's less than optimal on, though (especially for points used for labels) is L-shapes, because often the points end up very close to the boundary, instead of more in the middle of the L's corner area.
