Can you provide us some more information - issues/errors you get when you try to install 1.8, how are you trying to install 1.8 (from UbuntuGIS repository or build from the source)?

comment Convert MineSight (*.msr) files to Shapefiles or Feature classes
Did you mean MineSight by Mintec? I don't know much about the software, but it appears that it can import shapefiles. So by any chance is there an option to export as shapefiles?

@PolyGeo, looks like they don't publish formal hardware/software requirements. Came across this 2011 email on QGIS user mailing list from this Stack GIS answer

Are you in a corporate network? If yes, this can happen due to proxy issues. You may have to contact your IT admin for details.

comment GRASS GIS related issues!
OP has arrived at conclusions that GRASS GIS can't do certain things without sufficient research. He/she could have asked how to perform such operations using GRASS GIS (particularly for 2nd conclusion).

As I haven't installed SAGA, I can't comment on your issue. I can only suggest that you can try installing the same from source using these instructions

comment Ubuntu user want to use District Council Uk OS data to print a map!
Tim, have you recently migrated to Ubuntu from Windows? If yes you will have to familiarize yourself with things like PPAs (for the migration link about UbuntuGIS PPA; this will be relatively easier), adding repository URLs to sources file (first method suggested by Mapperz) etc.

comment Add-ons on GRASS (win7)
If you have not done this already, I would suggest you read this tutorial for r.basin. You may have to convert your data to projected coordinates for the module to work.

comment Install the Pgadmin3 shapefile importer plugin on a Mac(10.8)?
I wrote this blog post to suit Ubuntu - staygeo.com/2013/05/enabling-postgis-shapefile-and-dbf.html. I believe the instructions would be similar for Mac. I had to set PGBINDIR environment variable, create symbolic link etc.

comment Why should a user choose to use open source software in their remote sensing research?
I used FOSS software in my academic project two years ago for the reasons outlined above. Above all I did not want to use pirated software! (Universities don't issue free student licenses here). I always feel proud to say my research was accomplished with 100% FOSS4G applications.

comment How can I enable Shapefile GUI Loader in pgadmin3?
I faced the same issue with the plugin on Ubuntu 12.04. Followed similar steps outline above except for different file paths. I had to set PGBINDIR environment variable as well. I have explained the steps I followed in my blog post: staygeo.com/2013/05/enabling-postgis-shapefile-and-dbf.html

Tom, the machine you are referring to is called a GPS. This question is possibly a duplicate here, as there are already questions seeking information about GPS and accuracy - gis.stackexchange.com/questions/43617/…; gis.stackexchange.com/questions/3414/…

I do not have ArcGIS/ERDAS on my computer. If I had them I would have given you the solution with screenshots. Also I could not get ERDAS Help online to provide you the instructions.
