comment Spring and OpenLayers conflicts on label rendering?
Usually there is no conflicts, when using jQuery and OL's "${name}" type styling together. For testing, turn 'label': "${name}" into 'label': 'foo' and check, whether labels show up or not.

comment restrict quantity of features displayed with OpenLayers
In that case, go for cavila's suggestion. I wasn't aware of rules and filtering myself :)

comment How to colour polygons with a completely transparent fill using MapServer?
There is no need to convert polygons to lines - you can define 'TYPE line' for layer in MAP file also for polygon geometry

comment Cannot reselect polygon after modify
No, I didn't modify OL source. And I was using DrawFeature control and featureadded event - so it's not your case, it's just idea, that you may try out. It was something like layer.events.on({'featureadded': function() {setTimeout('function_that_does_actual_stuff();', 100) }});

I had similar (but not exactly same) situation with DrawFeature control and point features. As ugly solution: on event handler I did setTimeout (for 100 ms, for example) for code, that selects feature. Reason - after executing callback for event, DrawFeature control had some more code to execute, that ruined things. setTimeout allowed control to finish it's job correctly.

comment Differences in costs of open-source hosted GIS software?
"As for charging for QGIS, they will be hosting it on their server so I guess that's what they're charging for." - what, on earth, is hosting desktop application in server?

comment How to display a lot of images with OpenLayers?
Basically you don't need to do any calculations, you need just x1 y1 x2 y2 for each image. But, as said, that solution doesn't work correctly because of feature rendering issue.

comment How to display a lot of images with OpenLayers?
You could create WMS service with Geoserver, that servers all images. Each image should be in separate layer (separate layer in WMS service, not separate layer in OpenLayers) and it should be turned off by default. In OpenLayers, create one WMS layer and control enabled layer by checboxes (layers=image1,image4,etc in request string).

OK, in that case features with regular style aren't suitable. But it's possible to change style dynamically with context functions, so you can compute their size accordingly to resolution. I modified my original posting.

comment software architecture for creating routes?
You have to give more information about current technical solution - there's "device" (laptop? tablet? cell phone?) with GPS receiver. How do you collect GPS data - do you read it directly with OpenLayers? Is there any database involved? Are those coordinates sent also to some kind of server?
