I'm a beginning expert on computer applications in archaeology - especially GIS (ArcGIS, QGIS) and databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL), but I also dabble in making websites (html/css and I learn php and JavaScript).

He on GIS.SE, I'm sort of a "noob pioneer", asking stupid questions that other noobs wanted to know but are afraid to ask themselves.

I hope I'll be able to share information about my first field of study here on SE.

There are several (slightly?) different formats with .grd extension, and QGIS can open only some of these. I don't know which format exactly is on Diva GIS, but I can't open it this way, as well as the guy who asked another question on this topic.

comment How to get “.GDB” (Esri File Geodatabase) support in Quantum GIS (osgeo4w - qgis)
The linked page relies on its first link ("Download the SDK from ESRI's website"), which is dead now.

Yes and no - the data I have are too big for ordinary editor (hundreds mega), but Vim can handle them. Well, can handle - it took half an hour to replace first two (double space) columns, and then I left for more than two hours and found Vim still working on the third column of the half-giga file. I must have done something wrong (running too much work at once, causing frequent read from/write to disc), but prospects of preprocessing much longer than running the Grass tool make me try to find some faster workaround.

comment When a tool fails, ArcGIS returns me to the tool dialog. How to change it?
2PolyGeo: I understand this is handy, but having a chance to change it somewhere in the settings would be even handier. If you are positive there's no such option now, make it an answer. I will accept it (and perhaps give you +1 for that "ArcGIS Idea" tip).

@PolyGeo: I have checked if "tool dialog" is really what I thought it is, and it's not where error messages display (and from where I copy them), but where the parameters are set. I usually run models through this, so after running the log I get returned to the tool dialog. It's a matter of a click or two to leave it, no real problem, but it's annoying. I editted my question to clarify this.

comment Path format for intermediate data while sharing models
@danb: while using .gdb as the scratch workspace, the same error is returned with and without the extension. While using a folder as scratch workspace, it works both with and without the extension.
