comment Tilemill Dynamic Tile Generation
Cartodb likely uses it's own opensource Tile server (github.com/Vizzuality/Windshaft) which can render tiles dynamically.

I realize and obviously the measures are subjective. However when sourced from voting on tags for example (e.g.: is a restaurant romantic or not) I feel the results can still be pretty meaningful. These attributes would be used for people making a decision which place to go to. As such it's decidedly data that's used in-destination, meaning that places in separate cities aren't compared. Therefore whatever cultural bias may exist in a particular city, comparing places within that city would have the same frame of reference. Top 100 western touristic cities would be a nice start :)

Thanks for responding here Tom. Question was meant generally, but I'm particularly thinking of the default Mapbox streets layer. So I guess I'm talking to the right person ;). Just realized (duh) that I could just inspect my client request/responses to get some real feel of sizes. 25KB/tile for levels 13-16 and 15-20KB/tile for level 17 seems to be average. And being served as png indeed no use for gzip. Checking now if (guessing yes) untoggling buildings makes a big impact on size. Thanks.

Having the same issue with subway-lines. Have you found/implemented an acceptable solution?
