My day job is Information Security for The University of Auckland, New Zealand.

I have been working in IT for around 35 years. My degree was in science with a heavy emphasis on Mathematics (particularly statistical and computational).

First job was as a statistician in University Zoology Dept after a few years I moved to what was then the "Computer Centre" where I was mostly involved with user support for statistical packages.

Over the years I have done worked in most non management areas in academic IT -- for the last 15 years I have been largely responsible for the technical side of Information Security at tht University.

My specific interest in GIS is centered around my conservation work on Tiritiri Matangi Island www.tiritirimatangi.org.nz where I am the volunteer coordinator for the weeding program.

We are currently setting up a GIS system of our own to keep track of weed related data.

The Island is jointly managed by the SOTM -- "Supporters" and Department of Conservation. DOC have lots of GIS resources but these are not accessible to volunteers and so we have decided to do our own thing with QGIS and export data for DOC's records rather than pass the data direct to DOC.

comment merging layer stored in PostGIS
When I tried this - assuming that by copy you mean via clipboard (on a mac with QGIS 1.8.0) I got errors on saving the combined layer back into PostGIS about duplicate GIDs. When I looked at the attribute table the GIDs were blank for the features that I had added. Maybe 1.9.0 has fixed this behaviour. Bravo if that is the case.

THanks! that will do nicely :) I figured that it should be straight forward using SQL but as a long time mysql user I am still coming to grips with Postgres and what you can and can't do with sequences.

I have just looked at PostGIS Topology and yes that fits the bill but I suspect it is overkill for what I need. But it does answer the question. "How do professionals do it?". Thanks Nicklas.

Ah! yes that works. The small catch is that you still need to select between track, waypoint, route, etc. with no indication of which gpx file you are referring to. Still beats going throught all the menus for each file. Also the file names are not reflected in the layer names.

I figured this was the only way to set up something that is automated. And can be used across multiple pojects. The combination of James' and your answers is great.

Thanks, I had missed then sql button in the database manager. This would be really good for testing and one offs -- getting the sql right and then viewing the results in QGIS.
