comment ST_ShortestLine gives different results for 4326 and 900913 projections. Which is correct?
Aha, that begins to make a little more sense. So if I were to go outside and find the GPS coordinates of the nearest physical point on the road (from a bus stop) then it should match up with the blue line (900913) rather than the pink one. Correct?

comment ST_Buffer won't accept bevel join styles (always displays as round)
Thanks for the help. Here is the output of the version query… "POSTGIS="2.0.2 r10789" GEOS="3.3.7-CAPI-1.7.7" PROJ="Rel. 4.8.0, 6 March 2012" LIBXML="2.7.8" LIBJSON="UNKNOWN"" I've been checking that every time I upgrade GEOS and it always reflects the latest version installed (without using ALTER EXTENSION).
