A Philadelphia artist with degrees in material engineering and a smattering of coding experience in: Fortran, Basic, C, Php, html, Actionscript.
Currently obsessed with photography and the broader modes of visual perception; thus GIS visualization is perhaps becoming a new obsession.

Adding a delimited text layer with QGIS 1.1.0 You're next hurdle to seeing your data, if your not already familiar, is knowing which Coordinate Reference System your data uses. It took me some banging around to get my layers to play nice (ie. superpose perfectly) so if you have multiple layers be thorough with your understanding of the QGIS reprojection methods. Other wise one layer may be in Europe while another might be in the Atlantic Ocean. |

Adding a delimited text layer with QGIS 1.1.0 There are few enough points that you could edit this in a text file. Try replacing all spaces with a comma and putting each point set on a new line (The top line being your titles also with comma delimiters). Save it as plain text with the CSV extention and inport it to QGIS as a CSV (that's "comma separated values" so you'll choose comma as the delimiter). |

How to customize label color in QGIS: Data defined label settings? Expressions? Both? What are the steps? Sorry I wasn't clear. I'm new to this too. QGIS has two separate methods of styling labels. If you select the ABC button in the toolbar, it has a much more advanced system (and I believe the only one which will be supported in newer versions). This is the xpression based labeling system I'm speaking of. More tips on it's use below. gis.stackexchange.com/questions/22896/… gis.stackexchange.com/questions/41478/… |

How to customize label color in QGIS: Data defined label settings? Expressions? Both? What are the steps? One place to start:nathanw.net/2011/10/27/expression-based-labeling. I'm also looking for a more comprehensive index expressions. I selected my labels by using a field in my attributes table. You may be able to link your polygons color attribute to your labels color attribute through a logical expression. |

Why do my Shapefiles not align correctly? That did the Trick! : 1. started fresh 2. didn't set CRS, but did set On-The-Fly reprojection. 3. imported the census (EPSG:2272) map and set the project CRS to this layer. 4. Imported the Police call data from the .CVS file and set that layer to WGS84. Bingo, right on top of each other. The only question I have is, should I post this as a comment or an answer? |

Why do my Shapefiles not align correctly? Are you saying, Jay, that a polar CRS is the native underlying mathematical system and that any Cartesian system is always a projected transformation back to the polar sytem? |

Why do my Shapefiles not align correctly? Thanks for the tips Jay, I'll keep grinding. You've given me another clue and a question. There must be some sort of reconciliation between Polar and Cartesian systems. When you say a Lat/Long system is technically 'not projected', how is a degree based system handled relative to a X/Y system? Should I post this as a new question? |
