Developer of web maps mostly using the ArcGIS Javascript API.

I am starting out in a career in the GIS and geospatial web app development field, so I am fairly ignorant, but also very hungry to learn and genuinely grateful when someone takes the time to answer one of my questions.

I want to contribute more to this community as question answerer as I actually gain enough experience to give back.

comment Looking for ArcGIS API for javascript and Jquery samples
Unfortunately, Esri decided the base their API on Dojo. I'm just saying that because its important to understand that the API code actually uses Dojo pretty extensively - its not just that they happened to use it for the examples. So you will have to learn some Dojo anyway, unless you want to recreate in jQuery the tools they have developed already based on Dojo. I'm with you though. I'd prefer to use jQuery.

comment Why do my map labels disappear when publishing as a service on ArcGIS server?
@julien Please confirm the following details: You are labeling a small selection (less than 20) of the countries of Europe using 2-letter abbreviation codes, using the standard label engine and not Maplex. You are not currently using a scale dependency labeling scheme. You can see the labels visible in your mxd (map document), but they do not come through when you publish it as a service, even after waiting for possible slow loading. Is that all correct?

@julien How dense are your labels in the map document? I followed the link to your application and it looks like it would not have much detail, but I don't know what is being labeled. If you have a high density, try setting the labels to only display below a certain scale when the user zooms in.

comment How to upload polygon data for appending to a geodatabase via a JS API web application
Thanks very much @Devdatta. I'll be using your advice to start. I may have some follow questions as I work into this, but I will try to report back how it works out either way.

@DerekSwingley I will gladly post some code to get help with this, but my project has 111 lines of html and 267 lines of a separate but referenced JS file. I'm not sure which part of all that would be useful for diagnosis. For a little more information, the error is simply occurring at the line where the esri object is first used. If I comment out that function, the error will still happen at the next instance.
