comment Question about geotiffs
It would also solve my problem if you can help me convert .tifs + worldfiles to geotiffs. When I use gdal_translate, however, (command: gdal_translate -of GTiff input_file.tif output file.tif), the georeferencing information is still lost.

Thanks Llaves. I missed your link. Both of our machines have the same settings, unfortunately, in options -> raster -> raster dataset. Neither of us has the "use world file" box checked.

comment Question about geotiffs
Llaves, good thought. Other computers can't correctly open the .tif I created either if I don't include the supporting files. If I load the georeferenced .tif+supporting files and add a last control point then update georeferencing on my colleague's computer, the file becomes the self-contained geotiff I want. The only difference I can find is that I have ArcGIS 10 Service Pack 4 and my colleague doesn't have a service pack. MappaGnosis, I'm the only one using GDAL, but just gdalinfo as a diagnosis tool.

comment Problem converting georeferenced jpgs to geotiff - image is shifted/warped
The original georeferenced jpeg is here: dl.dropbox.com/u/17669584/temp/tech/040407a_001.zip. The translated geotiff is here: dl.dropbox.com/u/17669584/temp/tech/040407a_001_2.tif. I'm also concerned that the .tif image size is 300+ megs whereas the .jpg is 15 mb.

Thanks for the suggestions! MKennedy, do you know how to specify not to change the gcs name in the geotiff?

comment Question about geotiffs
Thank you for the comments! Jay, I'm removing the supporting files because he hope to publish the images in Geoserver which requires geotiff format. We understand that a geotiff is a self-contained .tif that does not need any supporting files to correctly georeference. I would love to be corrected if I am mistaken!

comment How can I transform a georeferenced JPG to a georeferenced TIF?
DavidF, your answer was really helpful! I have two followup questions if you'd be willing to help. I used the exact commands you mentioned (gdal_translate -of GTiff myFile.jpg myFile.tif) to convert a georeferenced jpg to a geotiff, but the converted image is distorted such that it is no longer correctly georeferenced. Do you know how to fix this? (See image here dl.dropbox.com/u/17669584/gdal_translate%20error.JPG. Sorry, I don't have enough reputation points to post an image on stackexchange. The left image is the georeferenced jpg. The right image is the converted geotiff, and purple
