comment Finding the closest Geometry in PostGIS
ALWAYS use the generic function of the Boston GIS site, the simple one is incredibly slow for big tables and the effort to apply it is not bigger.

Thanks for the hint, I will try and update, but the data is not that easy to access at the moment

comment What's the Semantic Web got to do with GIS?
You may not have been exposed to the recent documentary using the Brautigan poem as title: bbc.co.uk/programmes/b011k45f the first episode is here, not for long I suppose: vimeo.com/27393748

comment Where to find a list of geographic 'objects'?
@whuber I'm trying to see if there are characteristics that these objects/entities have that table-top entities don't have, and for this I would need an authoritative list. Recognising there is a difference between these two types of objects is somehow subjective therefore I can understand you would like to close the question. Though I think the abstract nature of the question, that appears to be a problem, is inherent: if I was asking for a list of water bodies that would be much easier, cf. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_of_water#Types_of_bodies_of_water

comment Where to find a list of geographic 'objects'?
Thanks, that's a good start. It could be combined with the list of places: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_places . I was hoping for something more manageable but that could be it.

This list focuses on physical geography, it doesn't include restaurants for example and other man made features.

comment Where to find a list of geographic 'objects'?
You're right, I hope my comment on the opposition between geographic space and table top space should limit the field. In any case, I can't see the three examples I give at the end (apple, cat, fun) being part of this admittedly large enumeration.

@blah238 I believe the question can be answered by presenting such an enumeration, however complete. If none exist that would be an answer too.

comment Where to find a list of geographic 'objects'?
@Kirk_Kuykendall it is certainly in the context of semantics of GIS.

comment Where to find a list of geographic 'objects'?
@whuber yes there is some conceptual vagueness attached to what is 'geographic' or not, however cognitive geographers also insist on the strong difference between geographic space as opposed to table top space of objects one can manipulate. I need a reasonable (not objective) list of elements of geographic space.

comment How to use the pgRouting TSP function?
Did you manage to make it work? It may have to do with how your point_layer is organised
