comment How to recalc WGS84 Shape_Area field to square miles in ArcGIS 10
Yes - you can't change the CRS of a map in Arcpy. So in the script exprt the selection based on UTM zone, calculate the areas in that UTM to a new field, then copy the values back to the original datasets (by either using cursor or a join and field calculate)

comment How far ESRI Technical Support goes?
My experience of Esri UK is very bad, I have never had any support solved by Esri UK. Only get the response "we have passed this onto Esri Inc..." blah blah blah. And then it takes ages to get a reply. It seems Esri Inc. treat US customers as priority before overseas customers (maybe correctly so). You can never talk to them directly and Esri UK play piggy in the middle and just get in the way. This is especially so on development support. I just use the forums now, I have stopped using Esri UK.

comment How to add an attribute field to an existing Shapefile via Python
Ah I remember now yes as Sasa said the creation of a new DBF would be required. Copy the schema (as in fields etc.) across then make your additions, then copy the records across. The "great" DBF... :(

Speaking to Esri at the developer summit, they recommended custom renderer of which the sample is provided here: C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\DeveloperKit10.0\Samples\ArcObjectsNet\MultivariateRenderer Thanks for the pointers Kirk
