I'm a biologist, mostly working in theoretical aspects of animal populations as well as solving 1001 other little problems. I spend my days in the coding dungeon and my tool of trade is R. I find it very useful for running simulations, doing data manipulation, statistics and shooting oneself in the foot (fortunes() pun intended). I am no stranger to field biology, where I mostly work with plants, butterflies and hoverflies.

I am also a PhD candidate in biostatistics at University of Ljubljana. I work with capture-mark recapture techniques and I fancy simulations. My other interests are computer vision, ecological modeling, data visualization and algorithms.

comment How to compare spatial patterns (crime cases vs population)?
You should mention you cross-posted at r-sig-geo mailing list as well.

comment Checking if Lng and Lat fall inside polygons from ESRI Shape file
@MoustafaAlzantot please edit your original question, not everyone reads comments. Plus, you have greater flexibility regarding code folding and syntax highlighting.

@MoustafaAlzantot What's the exact command you're using to import data using readOGR?

comment how to overlay a polygon over SpatialPointsDataFrame and preserving the SPDF data?
Great, this also works for multiple polygons (I've added an example to play with into Joshua's answer).

comment How to extract values from rasters at location of points in R?
What about something along the lines of cbind(coordinates(presencias), variables_presencia)? You can then convert to SPDF using coordinates(result) <- ~ X + Y and you can use the plethora of methods designed for spatial objects again.

comment How to extract values from rasters at location of points in R?
Shouldn't the values correspond to the coordinates of your presencias?

comment How to get the second nearest neighbor between two point patterns in R?
Would nndist and nnwhich also be up for this task? Just noticed these two functions on the r-sig-geo list today...

comment How do I randomly alter a raster map of habitat types?
Have you looked at the raster package yet? It's got a lot of tools to work with raster (noo, rly?) data.

comment relationship between sp package in R; mapwindow; ArcGIS/Quantum GIS
Have you considered SAGA-GIS? It hooks up to R pretty easily.

comment Problems with NA values when reading .DEM file with R 'raster' package in Windows
I got different results in different versions of raster (see my comments above) so I'm not totally convinced it's GDAL per se.

I got different values on raster_1.8-12 (but identical to yours on 1.9-12) on winXP.

Can you include your sessionInfo() in your post?

comment find the centroid of a cluster of points
@whuber For this case, the median and mean centroids overlap. I will leave the figure but will modify the R code to reflect the correct answer.

This is getting more and more interesting. Thank you for your answers. I'm looking into the matter.
