comment Dissolve polygons in QGIS (GEOS) with tolerance
That detail should be incorporated into the above answer, thanks for clarifying :)

My guess is that this is a numeric problem, and I wonder if your pretty good copy of the OP's geometry, would capture the same numeric properties?

comment How to make raster cells with a certain value stand out in QGIS?
I'm working with datasets with billions of pixels, so I would prefer not to vectorize or create a seperate dataset for visualisation purposes. Further more, it would be neat with something working in screen space :)

comment Importing a shapefile into Postgres: Can I use Multiple CPU Cores?
If I remember correctly, PG/PGIS only uses one core for each connection. So I think you should be able to run multiple importers at the same time - each having its own connection. But I don't know if the database (or hard disks) will be the bottleneck.

comment How to convert self intersecting polygon to multipolygon?
The whole idea was to use existing algorithms and not begin from the start. If I have to invent the wheel again, I will do that :)

As I see it, the script in your link just points to how I can explode a MultiPolygon to individual polygons. In my case, I have only one ring.
