I am particularly interested in international projects and those focused on remote environments where there exists potential for interesting and meaningful analyses using GIS and remote sensing methodologies.

comment Is cost of new LiDAR data reasonable for deliverables provided (in Canada)?
There are a few companies that fly LiDAR in Alberta - next step would be getting quotes from all of them. Also, make sure the contract states a timeline and exactly what they will be providing you with.

Just to clarify, you are paying a company to gather NEW lidar data, not sell you existing data? What area of Canada?

Good point. +1.

comment Selecting only parallel lines along a center line
Are you open to coding your own tool? This could be accomplished in arcpy, .NET, or python (if you want to use QGIS).

comment Why does ASTER created -0 to 0 instead of -1 to 1?
You're correct - I must have mistyped. I have edited my response. The rest of the information still applies.

comment Estimate forest stand height from Landsat imagery?
Thanks for your input Tom - your findings on LANDSAT accuracy for measuring stand height are in line with what I am finding in the literature. I agree that LIDAR is ideal, but unfortunately I need to cover a large area and the cost of LIDAR is prohibitive.

comment Strange structures appear inside dry river in Egypt
+1 These are concrete dams used to reduce the impact of flash floods, which are very common in arid regions on the coast of the Red Sea. Because of the river gradient, water from a flood event will have to fill each 'section' before it can spill over into the next. This increases the time it takes for water to reach the inhabited area, which in this case is the town of Quseer. They are essentially attempting to remove the 'flash' part of a flash flood.

comment Does it matter what webserver (Apache, IIS, …) is used with Geoserver?
If you're referencing ESRI Geoportal, it was developed under the Apache license. It will function with IIS as well, but you'll then have to configure both. Ideally you would only configure everything once, but you could develop on Apache and move to IIS, it will just mean some extra work later on.

comment Which districts are on the coast?
What software are you using? In QGIS and ArcGIS you can perform a spatial selection based on the intersection of your administrative boundaries and your coastline.

comment Best way to combine 7 different shapefiles into one geodatabase
Merging creates a NEW featureclass while append would add 6 of your featureclasses to one existing featureclass.

comment How do I display latitude longitude data on a UTM map?
Can you post a sample of the coordinates from your CSV file? I suspect that your data is not in UTM. First guess would be it's in the WGS84 datum (try using this when importing). In order to use the data in UTM you will need to project it.

comment Help with gap mask filling and landsat 7 in arcgis 10
Also, for scientific purposes you are best to avoid Landsat-7 unless absolutely necessary as the data quality is very low and you can't correct it much beyond merely making it look reasonable.

If you're not looking for legacy data, Landsat-8 imagery is now available and has excellent coverage now that's it's completed so many orbits.

What version and service pack of ArcGIS are you running? There have been known bugs with this tool is previous versions (pre 10.0 SP4).

comment How to write Python script for spatial interpolation?
Do you have an initial script that is not yet working that you can share? Most users of this site will expect some initial effort before providing you with finished code.

comment How to highlight features on user click in Leaflet?
You'll have to link your features somehow - an attribute would be the easiest way (e.g. all features associated with a specific bridge get a 'bridgeID' of say, 3). This is more of a logic handling issue than a technical problem. If you're already using GeoJSON you're 90% of the way there.

comment Why does ArcMap drag and drop report “one or more dropped items invalid”?
+1 The distinction between a 'layer' and the underlying 'dataset' is very important.

comment Is a master's degree needed for a GIS career?
+1 for writing. Even if the field you choose is very technical (i.e. GIS), the ability write gives you a huge advantage. You might start your career digitizing roads, but nobody wants to do that for 30 years.

comment Estimating sunlight hours from slope, aspect, and latitude
You might consider using Area Solar Radiation (help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help../index.html#//…) if you're using ArcGIS. You can choose to use an entire year if you just want the total radiation. The input data requirements are simple. Though, I can't imagine that you would want to ignore latitude.

comment Creating Cluster “Zones”
Excel is not database software and is very limited in terms of its' ability to search data. PostgreSQL allows you to perform SQL queries (w3schools.com/sql/sql_intro.asp) on data across tables. In addition to this, Excel cannot store geometries, whereas PostGIS can. PostgreSQL runs on Windows just fine.
