What language (or languages) are the next 'big thing'? Programming languages used in GIS can also be platform dependent (.NET for ArcObjects). |

How do you scan/quantify vegetation using satellite images? +1. Consider spending some time looking at the Earth Explorer link provided by @Aaron. Read the documentation and download some of the imagery. For some background information use wikipedia to look up the Landsat series of satellites - you'll get an idea of how they work and the data they can provide you with. |

Point and Line Statistical Analysis +1 Similar exercises would have the user list as many relationships as possible and perform a regression or principal component analysis. This may not be appropriate in cases where you are missing data for specific important variables, but it's a start and it's simple. |

ArcGIS Heads up digitizing - Rooms and doors +1 That's an excellent solution given the software limitations. |

ArcGIS Heads up digitizing - Rooms and doors Are you set on using ArcGIS for this task? I know many people use it for what would be considered non-geographic mapping, but IMO there are better tools suited to the job. E.g. AutoCAD, Google SketchUp. |

Creating maps programmatically using ArcObjects. Adding legends, scale bars, north arrows? This is perfect - I've never heard the term 'map surrounds' used before in the context of ArcMap. |

Raster Version of Spatial Join (one to many) I'm removing my original comment because it was too generalized and my terminology may be confusing. My point was, don't treat raster and vector data as the same thing - the same terminology (e.g. attribute table) may be used to describe a similar thing, but there may be nuances to that thing that make them different (e.g. indices and tuples vs. a vector attribute table). |

Possibly corrupt polyline file is causing making polygons problematic. A random thought - try to use the Simplify Line tool (resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//…) first. Reducing the number of vertices and then running the Check Geometry function may yield some results. |

At the northpole, which way is east? Fair enough. As you say, the cardinal directions are undefined and therefore the terminology needed for an answer differs - it's no longer appropriate to use the word 'direction' or 'way'. Therefore, in answer to the original question, east is not defined while at the North Pole. The concept of east/west doesn't apply. |

At the northpole, which way is east? Perhaps 'bearing' should be used instead of 'direction'. I merely meant that in terms of North/East/South/West, the only bearing you can travel from the North Pole is South. |
