Read the documentation and download some of the imagery. For some background information use wikipedia to look up the Landsat series of satellites - you'll get an idea of how they work and the data they can provide you with.

This may not be appropriate in cases where you are missing data for specific important variables, but it's a start and it's simple.

My point was, don't treat raster and vector data as the same thing - the same terminology (e.g. attribute table) may be used to describe a similar thing, but there may be nuances to that thing that make them different (e.g. indices and tuples vs. a vector attribute table).

A random thought - try to use the Simplify Line tool (resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//…) first. Reducing the number of vertices and then running the Check Geometry function may yield some results.

As you say, the cardinal directions are undefined and therefore the terminology needed for an answer differs - it's no longer appropriate to use the word 'direction' or 'way'. Therefore, in answer to the original question, east is not defined while at the North Pole. The concept of east/west doesn't apply.
