Good question. I don't know. The query that causes the error is an internal one. Not anything I'm sending. I think it may be a bug, or wrong configuration data, on my side.

The GDAL driver had performance issues. So, some improvements were done during summer 2013. Those improvementes were included in GDAL 1.11.x. Would you be able to provide sample files for testing?

Not really. Just want to test how the db works with different amount of vertices. For example: will it be able to handle polygons with 100K vertices? So, not really worried about the area, or the shape
