I'm a software developer, focused on GIS. PostGIS and GDAL committer. I'd love to add 'where' to people's lives.

absolutely right. Thanks!

Hello, did you solve this? I have exactly the same problem...

comment How to add color interpretation for raster bands using GDAL?
I've asked my boss, and I can't publish data :-(. I actually could mix the files with a standalone code, that copies band by band the input files in the output. I'd like to do it with gdal_merge. My poblem is I can't set RGB color interpretation for the output file with gdal_merge.

Thanks for your tip! I want to merge 3 single band geotiffs in one 3-band geotiff. My problem is the output of gdal_merge is actually empty (pixels = 0). I can't use that output for anything.

Mmm... thanks for the response. I'm trying those options. Seems than I can't use PHOTOMETRIC=rgb because my datatype is not int. But I'm on it...

Ok,updated question. I need a color table for first band.

comment How to add color interpretation for raster bands using GDAL?
Mmmm, ok. If I warp them to create north up rasters, I can build the VRT, and add ColorInterp where needed, buy I still get gray, undefined, undefined. I need to create a color table for first band, but I don't know how. I'll update the question.

I actually did that, but I get "ERROR 6: SetColorTable() not supported for multi-sample TIFF files.". And I get 0 for all pixels. I'm not sure about the meaning of this error.

No,they all have the same geotransforms, but they're no north-up rasters (rotation parameters are not 0). And gdalbuildvrt does not support rotated geo transforms. I don't want to warp them.

I tried, but my raster files are rotated...

Thanks! The project was finally cancelled, but I think your solution is a good one.

comment How could I make this PostGIS query run faster?
Not exactly. I wrote the GDAL PostGIS Raster driver, and helped with PostGIS Raster extension (did some functions, mostly related with GDAL). I know the raster-polygon intersection implies the polygonization of the raster previous to intersection. That could be a heavy process. I don't know if there's some PostgreSQL specific thing I can do to make it faster without changing PostGIS Raster internals.

comment Why does gdalbuildvrt not allow these things?
Yes, I'm actually using VRT driver to develop my own one. I've read, in several places, that is hard to work with rotated rasters. Tools like gdal_translate or gdalbuildvrt doesn't work in the input raster(s) is (are) rotated. So, why is so difficult? Isn't enough with the GeoTransform array?

comment Why does gdalbuildvrt not allow these things?
Ok, thanks for your response. I think I'm going to look for information about merging rotated images. I know it's difficult, but I don't have enough background to argue why.

Did you try with the -s_srs/-a_srs/-t_srs options?

comment What should I expect in this case?
Mmmm... still a doubt. I know cartesian coordinate system sets the origin in the bottom left corner, while images do it in the top left corner. So, in georeferenced images, you need a negative Y resolution, otherwise you get a south up image. Ok so far. But, for example, why doesn't gdalbuildvrt accept positive y resolutions? If this doesn't mean a mistake, just a flipped image, what's the problem?
