It's already being cast to kilometers. Perhaps you meant degrees? I'll check and see if that's possible.

comment PostGIS Type Modifier Error
I don't mean to sound dense, but how does one do that? The articles you referred to pertain to GeoAlchemy which I'm not using. I've looked in the PostGIS manual and don't see this mentioned anywhere. Thanks.

comment Limit data imported into PostGIS database?
What I'm asking is if I'll only need specific columns (i.e. tags) to perform a geocoding query and, if so, is there a way to import the .pbf file with a loader such as osm2pgsql or Imposim so as to only load those columns? E.g., osm2pgsql creates a "planet_osm_points" table which has a "culvert" column. I seriously doubt that column is required to create a geocoding query so I'd like to omit it when loading to speed up the loading process.

comment Write Nominatim-like geocode query using only PostGIS functions?
Thanks for your comment but I believe I'll leave the question as-is. I'll know which parts of the address are what. Given that I know, for example, what the street number, street name, and postal code are, I'd like to know if I can use those element to create a geocode query utilizing the functions provided by PostGIS or if it's mandatory to use a geocoding layer/engine like Nominatim.

comment Install both postgis and postgresql-9.1-postgis packages?
For others who were wondering about this, the file /usr/share/doc/postgresql-[version]-postgis/README.Debian.gz answers the question I posed above and also provides excellent instructions on how to install both PostGIS packages.

Thanks. Just curious... why did you indicate your system is "unstable?"
